Signs You’re Healing (Even If It Doesn’t Feel Like It)
When we talk about healing, it’s easy to imagine dramatic breakthroughs and a striking before-and-after moment—like one day you’re overwhelmed and reactive, and the next you’re totally grounded. The pain is gone, the triggers disappear, and suddenly you're this calm, centered version of yourself.
But real healing doesn’t usually unfold in this way.
More often, it's quiet. Slow. Sometimes confusing. It shows up in small, barely noticeable shifts like pausing before you respond, noticing you feel less drained after certain conversations, or realizing that an old habit just doesn’t fit anymore. And yet, these tiny changes are the markers of something big.
What Does Healing Actually Mean?
From my perspective—as a psychotherapist who works relationally and somatically—healing isn’t about becoming a perfect, enlightened version of yourself where you never get triggered or feel bad again. Healing is more about coming back to yourself, getting reconnected to the parts of you that may have gone into hiding, and integrating old pains to find new meaning.
It’s about reclaiming access to your emotional, physical, and relational aliveness.
It’s learning how to feel again…safely, steadily, and without collapsing.
It’s remembering that your body, your boundaries, and your needs actually matter.
It’s letting your system experience enough safety that it no longer has to live in hypervigilance or shutdown.
When you begin to experience these things (even in small doses), know that you’re on the right path.
Signs You’re Healing
Here are a few signs that healing might be unfolding:
You’re getting better at pausing.
That split-second of space between something happening and how you respond? That’s healing in action.
It might not sound like much, but it’s a huge shift. Where you used to react from fear, urgency, or people-pleasing, you now catch yourself. Maybe you breathe. Maybe you ask yourself what you need. That pause is a sign of capacity. Of choice. And it’s a sign that your nervous system is no longer locked in survival mode.
You feel your feelings more fully.
You might find yourself crying more easily, or feeling a wave of grief you didn’t expect. You might feel more anger or more tenderness. This doesn’t mean you’re “backsliding”—it means you’re thawing and finally getting to feel what’s been beneath the surface for so long.
When your body starts to trust that it’s safe to feel, the emotions you’ve kept at a distance start to show up. Not to flood you, but to be witnessed, processed, and moved through.
This is a good thing. Even when it feels heavy.
You’re less available for what drains you.
You’re not as quick to say yes just to avoid tension. You don’t force yourself into conversations that leave you feeling depleted. You start noticing what feels good to your body, and what doesn’t.
Sometimes this can look like setting boundaries. Other times, it’s just choosing silence, rest, or space. It’s not about being perfect at it. It’s about no longer abandoning yourself as quickly or as often.
You can name your needs (even if you’re still working on honoring them).
This might sound small, but it’s a radical shift. Being able to say, “I think I need some reassurance,” or “I feel overwhelmed and I’m not sure why,” is powerful.
Even when it feels clumsy, the act of naming what you’re feeling or needing means you’re building a bridge back to yourself. And over time, that bridge gets stronger.
Your body begins to feel less dysregulated.
You might still feel anxious or tense or shutdown, but you’re also beginning to feel little pockets of safety. That could be during a walk, in a therapy session, when you’re dancing, when your pet curls up next to you, or when you finally exhale after holding it in all day.
Somatic healing isn’t about never feeling activated. It’s about having a way back to yourself when you do. It’s about recognizing what safety feels like, not just in theory, but in the felt sense of your body.
Healing Is Subtle, But It’s Real.
It won’t always feel like progress. Some days might feel like you’ve taken five steps back. But the truth is, if you’re noticing any of these things, you’re healing.
As you read this, I hope you’ll pause to acknowledge how far you’ve come. Not because it’s all figured out, but because you’re showing up differently. You’re tending to yourself with more care.
Maybe not in the way you imagined.
Maybe not as fast as you’d like.
But you’re getting there.
And it matters.
